What’s Really in Your Mouthwash?

Most of us don’t think twice about the mouthwash we use every day. We simply swish and assume it’s doing its job. But if you flip the bottle over and read the ingredient list, you might notice a lot more going on than just minty freshness.

Just like the food we eat and the skincare products we use, what goes into your mouthwash matters. And once you understand the ingredients, you might start looking at your oral care routine a little differently.

Why Ingredients in Mouthwash Matter

You might be thinking, since I’m only swishing my mouthwash and not swallowing it, why do the ingredients matter so much?

Your mouth is home to a delicate balance of good and bad bacteria called the oral microbiome that work together to protect your teeth, support digestion, maintain healthy gums, and regulate your breath. Harsh ingredients can throw off this balance, killing both the harmful and beneficial bacteria, leading to irritation or dryness.

Not only that, but the ingredients in your mouthwash come into contact with your gums, tongue, and inner cheeks – some of the most absorbent tissues in the body.

Common Ingredients in Traditional Mouthwash

Many conventional mouthwashes are designed to kill bacteria quickly or address specific oral health concerns. Because of this, their formulas often prioritize strong antibacterial agents or preservatives to extend shelf life.

That’s why on the back of your mouthwash bottle, you’ll often see ingredients like these:

Alcohol - Used to help dissolve other ingredients and kill bacteria. Higher concentrations often cause a burning sensation and dry out the mouth or irritate oral tissues.

Cetylpyridinium Chloride - An antibacterial ingredient found in many over-the-counter mouthwashes that helps reduce plaque and bacteria.

Chlorhexidine - Often prescribed by dentists to treat gingivitis, it helps reduce the inflammation and swelling of your gums and reduce gum bleeding. It’s typically meant for short-term use, as it can cause staining, taste changes, and irritation if used long-term.

Triclosan - An antimicrobial agent used to combat plaque and gingivitis. While the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned its use in antibacterial soaps due to safety concerns, it remains in certain personal care products. Studies indicate that triclosan can be absorbed into the body and may affect hormone levels, increase allergy risks, and impact the gut microbiome.

Hydrogen Peroxide - Used in whitening mouthwashes to break down stains.

Glycerin - A humectant, which means it holds onto water and prevents the toothpaste from drying out in the tube.

Surfactants - Help dissolve ingredients and create foam.

Fluoride - Helps strengthen enamel and protect against cavities.

Artificial dyes and flavorings - To improve flavor and appearance.

Preservatives - Such as Benzoic acid, to keep the formula stable.

And that’s not an exhaustive list. If you’re using mouthwash daily, that’s a lot of exposure to these chemicals and ingredients.

While many conventional mouthwash ingredients are approved and effective for specific purposes, some may not be ideal for everyday use, or for everyone. If you prefer gentler formulas and simple ingredients, the list above may be alarming.

Natural Ingredients in Nix Mouthwash

Nix Mouthwash is made with a thoughtfully chosen blend of natural ingredients that work together to freshen breath and support your overall oral health.

Peppermint Oil + Menthol
What gives Nix its clean, refreshing feel, without the burning sensation.

Peppermint oil helps fight odor-causing bacteria, leaving your mouth feeling cool and fresh. Menthol enhances the cooling sensation, creating the refreshing experience we’ve all come to expect from a mouthwash.

Vitamin E
Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant and supports overall oral tissue health. It’s known to prevent oral cancer, repair tissue damage, and increase immunity.

Aloe Vera Extract
Known for being incredibly soothing, aloe vera in oral care helps calm irritated gums and support healing inside the mouth.

Aloe vera fights gingivitis and other periodontal diseases, controls bacteria that cause cavities and plaque, and provides natural moisture.

Sea Salt
There’s a good reason why salt has been used in oral care for generations. It’s a simple ingredient that can do a lot. It helps fight bad breath and gingivitis and can support healing for minor wounds or irritation in the mouth.

If you’re dealing with a sore in your mouth or have irritated gums, rinsing with warm salt water can work wonders for healing and relief.

Stevia Leaf Extract
Stevia leaf extract has therapeutic effects against tooth decay, inflammation, obesity, diabetes, and cancer.

In Nix Mouthwash, it adds a touch of natural sweetness without feeding harmful bacteria, creating a pleasant taste while keeping the formula simple and clean.

Baking Soda
Baking soda has long been used in oral care for its ability to gently clean and balance the mouth’s natural pH. It helps neutralize acids produced by bacteria, which can contribute to tooth decay and bad breath.

In mouthwash, baking soda supports a fresher feeling mouth while helping create an environment where harmful bacteria are less likely to thrive.

Erythritol
Erythritol is a naturally derived sweetener that also plays a role in oral health, helping reduce plaque and supporting a healthier oral environment by raising mouth pH.

It also helps keep the flavor balanced without using sugar.

What You Won’t Find in Nix Mouthwash

Just as important as what’s in Nix is what’s not.

Many traditional mouthwashes rely on:

  • High levels of alcohol

  • Harsh antiseptics

  • Artificial ingredients

  • Preservatives

These ingredients create that strong, burning sensation that people often associate with mouthwash. However, a stronger burn doesn’t mean stronger results.

Our formula has no alcohol and no artificial flavors, delivering a light, refreshing experience without being overwhelming.

Not to mention, commercial mouthwashes often come in large plastic bottles, creating unnecessary waste, while Nix Mouthwash comes in a reusable glass jar with zero plastic.

A Simpler Way to Rinse

As more people begin paying attention to the ingredients in their everyday products, oral care is becoming part of that conversation.

Choosing a mouthwash with simple, thoughtfully selected ingredients can be a small step toward a healthier routine for both you and the planet.
